In 2015 journalists at Dagens Nyheter reviewed a number of history books by Sweden’s largest publishers of educational material. By analysing the numer of people mentioned ny name it became clear that only 13% of them were women. These books followed the latest curriculum of 2011, in which the requirement of equality in education was higher than previous years. The publishers say they have tried to include a female perspective but it’s often times ”impersonal”, meaning the women are not mentioned by name.
If 13% is all that is given to women’s history in our educational system, we need to find other platforms for the women who are left out of the history books. I wanted to occupy a space where we usually see names of famous male athletes and powerful fashion houses. A product almost all women, no matter their age or origin, uses. A way for women to wear our history.
